Abstract
This paper examines the factors that underlie the depiction of the Buddha’s red kāṣāya (the robes of fully ordained Buddhist monks) which are adorned with golden circular motifs in premodern East Asian Buddhist paintings, and argues that this design is intricately connected to the period’s textile culture and the reinterpretation and representation of the “Golden kāṣāya” (金襴袈 裟). It first establishes that the Buddha’s red kāṣāya ya with golden patterns began to appear in Buddhist paintings during the Southern Song period and hypothesizes that the emergence and distribution of zhijin (weaving gold into fabric) textiles in tandem with the secularization of the golden ka- s.a - ya after the twelfth century exerted a significant influence on this phenomenon. Early Buddhist texts relate that both the Buddha and monastic practitioners wore simple robes; however, Chinese texts mention luxurious golden ka- s.a - ya in the context of offerings made to the Three Jewels and the transmission of Chan lineages. Beginning with the Jin dynasty(1115-1234), the Yuan(1271-1368) and Goryeo(918-1392) courts increasingly produced and bestowed golden kāṣāya to monks, transforming the golden kāṣāya from a conceptional sacred object into the actual ceremonial robes worn by high-ranking monks, imbued with secular authority. While no documents preserving regulations or examples of golden kāṣāya ya given as imperial gifts associated with the Jin court survive, textile relics from the Jin dynasty suggest that the zhijin textiles of the highest quality produced at the time were likely used to craft the golden kāṣāya. Roughly contemporaneously, golden circular motifs began to appear on the Buddha’s red kāṣāya in East Asian Buddhist paintings. It appears that these motifs are intended to visually emulate the zhijin golden kāṣāya produced and circulated after the twelfth century. Ultimately, the golden kāṣāya became established as a symbolic garment associated with the Buddha in Buddhist paintings, reflecting both religious and political symbolism and the influence of contemporary textile culture.
