이용희는 보링거의 『추상과 감정이입: 양식의 심리학에 대한 한 기고(寄稿)[Abstraktion und Einfühlung: Ein Beitrag zur Stilpsychologie (Abstraction and Empathy: A Contribution to the Psychology of Style)]』(1908)에 나타난 추상미술(the art of abstraction)과 감정이입적 미술(the art of empathy)에 대한 비교 분석에 크게 공감하였으며 지역과 시대를 막론하고 미에는 우열이 존재하지 않는다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다.
Abstract
Yi Yonghui (1917-1997) was an international relations specialist. He also studied art history. He published several books on the history of Korean painting. When he was a college student, he discovered the significance of Abstraction and Empathy: A Contribution to the Psychology of Style (1908) by Wilhelm Worringer (1881-1965). Abstraction and Empathy: A Contribution to the Psychology of Style exerted considerable influence on Yi. According to Worringer, abstraction and empathy mark the two poles of artistic sensitivity. The art of abstraction is that of primitive cultures. It is non-representational art. The art of empathy is associated with realism. It is representational art that realistically and recognizably depicts the natural world from ancient Greece to the Italian Renaissance. Worringer argued that the art of abstraction was not inferior to realist art, emphasizing that aesthetic value judgements are relative. Worringer’s argument provided a source of inspiration for Yi to understand the characteristics of Korean painting. When he first studied Korean painting, he was deeply distressed by Japanese scholars’ arguments that Korean painting was inferior to Chinese painting. After he discovered the importance of Abstraction and Empathy: A Contribution to the Psychology of Style, he began to take a fresh look at Korean paintings whose distinctive characteristics are unique. Armed with Worringer’s aesthetic relativism, Yi argued that Korean painting was worthy of respect in its own right.
