Abstract
Chae Yong-sin was active as a painter in Jeonju before being summoned to Hanyang in 1900 to replicate King Taejo’s royal portrait. In recognition of his contributions to the royal portrait project, Chae Yong-sin was appointed to a county magistrate position. In 1906, he returned to his hometown Jeonju, where he continued to meet the local demand for portraiture. It was during this period that he painted the Portrait of Yi Deok-eung. He is depicted in this attire in his portrait, preserving his image in a dignified manner. As a descendant of Prince Deokheung, Yi Deok-eung performed the Mangbae (望拜)ritual to pray for the eternal reign (Yeongmyeong, 永命) of Emperor Gojong. The Geumgwan Jobok, along with the landscape background reminiscent of Hwangdan in Hwayang Mountain, functioned as a visual device to legitimize this ritual and express loyalty to the imperial family. Chae Yong-sin did not merely depict the external features of his subjects; he enhanced their identity and narrative by incorporating landscape backgrounds into his portraits. In Portrait of Kim Seok-gon, he symbolically represented Kim’s artistic life by prominently featuring a large brush and a landscape background, emphasizing Kim’s 25 years of engraving rock inscriptions. In this way, the landscape background served as a means to express the subject’s life and beliefs, expanding the expressive scope of portraiture. After 1920, Chae Yong-sin established a workshop in Jeongeup, where he actively produced portraits and standardized the practice of placing landscape paintings on folding screens behind his subjects. These landscape screens included specific architectural elements such as hongsalmun (red gate), munru (gate tower), and buseop jibung (double-eaved roofs), suggesting a connection between the subject’s personal narrative and real-world settings. Chae Yong-sin’s artistic vision intricately intertwined personal and communal narratives, elevating the cultural and historical significance of portraiture.
