Abstract
The purpose of this paper has to examine the recipients’ responses, in terms of different variables, that are evoked right after they are exposed to political advertising. The recipient responses are divided into the affective responses and the cognitive responses, and the latter are divided again into the two types of thoughts: the ad-message thoughts of support arguments and counterarguments and the ad-execution thoughts of execution bolstering and execution discounting. Two variables of the types of appeals of political advertising and party identification are used to measure the recipient responses. The findings concerning the recipient responses are as follows. First, in terms of the variable of the appeal types of political advertising, the recipient responses have varied according to appeal types, except for the ad-message thoughts of support arguments. The ad-execution thoughts of execution discounting are more evoked in negative political advertising, whereas the ad-message thoughts of counterarguments are more suggested in positive political advertising. For positive advertising tends to involve comparative advertising. Second, in terms of the variable of party identification, the ad-message thoughts have shown no differences between two groups with high and low degrees of party identification. However, the ad-execution thoughts of execution bolstering are stronger in a group with a high-degree party identification, whose affective responses are also more positive.
