중등 여교사의 삶에서 '엄마 됨' 경험의 의미

본 연구는 중등 여교사들이 엄마가 되어 겪는 경험들이 교사로서 성장하는 과정에 어떤 의미가 있는지, 교사로서 발달 경험이 어머니로서 역할 수행에 어떤 의미가 있는지 상호 관련성을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해서 경력 10년 이상인 6명의 엄마교사들을 대상으로 면담을 실시하고 그 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 엄마 됨의 경험을 토대로 사랑과 신뢰로 학생을 대하는 것이 원칙대로 대하는 것보다 중요하다는 점을 인식하고, 학부모에 대한 보다 유연한 태도를 보일 수 있었으며, 변화하는 학교현장에 대해서 자기 목소리를 내는 모습으로 변모해갔다. 한편 교직경험은 참여자들의 엄마로서의 태도에도 영향을 미쳤는데, 이들은 학교에서의 생활태도와 교우관계를 강조하며 양육하는 모습을 보였으며, 자신의 자녀를 담당하는 ‘엄마교사’의 삶을 이해할 수 있었다. 이처럼 여 교사로서 교직경험과 엄마 됨의 경험들은 한 개인의 삶에 있어서 함께 요구되는 서로 다른 역할의 수행 과정이지만 서로 분리되어 경험되어지기보다 호혜적으로 작용함으로써 교사로서 성장과 엄마로서 성장 모두에 밀접하게 관련된다. 본 연구는 엄마 됨의 경험은 교사들의 성장과 발달에 근간임을 부각하면서, 교사들의 학교 밖의 다양한 경험에 주목해야 함을 시사해준다.
Abstract
In this paper, we have studied mothering experiences female middle school teachers, and how their roles as a teacher have been affected by their mothering experiences. We have interviewed six female middle school teachers who have been mothers and have worked for more than ten years. The study findings show that as becoming a mother and taking care of their own children, participants have been able to diagnose of students' developmental stages and their cognitive and emotional conditions. Moreover, participants have begun to realize the importance of students' personal interests, characters, personalities, and class activities in understanding students' lives. The participants have become to consider students' peer-relationship and lives in their school as a pivotal issue rather than academic performance. This study highlights that becoming a teacher and becoming a mother are two different, but closely related roles. Both experiences of female middle school teachers could be helpful not only for the development as a teacher but also for the development as a mother. Thus, in order to authentically understand teachers' development, it is imperative for researchers to examine and understand teachers' out-of-school experiences in addition to their school lives.
