Abstract
Prior research on the effect of online reviews has demonstrated that negative online reviews are superior to positive ones in an impact on consumer decision making. When the impact is increasing, decreasing, or nonexistent, however, is not clear yet. This research investigates the factors that determine the magnitude of the effect of negative online reviews. The present research proposed and tested the hypotheses that whether the effect of negative online reviews depends on 1) consumers' regulatory focus, and 2) regulatory fit between regulatory focus and decision strategy employed in the negative reviews. The findings indicate that although consumers' regulatory focus alone may not influence the size of the effect, regulatory fit shows a substantial impact on the magnitude of the effect of negative online reviews. The implication of the results was discussed in the context of marketing communication strategy.
