Abstract

While a growing body of research examines gender and school leadership, little is known about the impact of gender-congruence between principal and teacher on teacher satisfaction. This study uses Representative bureaucracy as a theoretical framework to navigate this inquiry. We focus on teachers and principals in Gyeonggi Education Panel Study between 2012 and 2014 and employ school-year fixed effects. We find that the gender-congruence is associated with increase in teacher satisfaction. The positive impact is particularly founded in the samples of secondary schools and male principals, respectively. While male teachers provide higher ratings for leadership of their male principals, while female teachers relatively give their female principals lower scores for the leadership, both of which explain possible mechanisms between the gender congruence and teacher satisfaction. With the importance of daily interaction between principal and teacher, we suggest professional development opportunities concerning gender issues for principals to better understand teachers with same or different gender.
