Abstract

This study investigates the impact of cold chain integration in a fresh agri-product supply chain. We consider three scenarios for cold chain management: outsourcing to a third-party logistics provider (3PL), supplier-led integration of cold chain functions, and retailer-led integration. The analysis reveals that both supplier-led and retailer-led integration result in higher cold chain investment compared to outsourcing. Among the three, supplier-led integration generates the highest level of cold chain investment, which in turn leads to the lowest wholesale price and the highest order quantity from the retailer. In terms of profitability, supplier-led integration yields the highest supply chain profit, as well as the highest individual profits for both the supplier and the retailer. In contrast, outsourcing to a 3PL results in the lowest profits to supplier, retailer and the overall supply chain. Finally, the scenario that minimizes the total food loss depends on factors such as the consumer's maximum willingness to pay and the efficiency of cold chain investment.
