Abstract
Although South Korea has recently experienced higher increases in the divorce rate, studies related to divorce have been limited to demographics. In particular, most studies on housing and divorce explored the effect of dissolution of families on home-ownership. This study transforms the usual framework of focusing on housing tenure changes as a result of divorce and answers the reverse questions : how do changes in housing prices affect the risk of divorce? We investigate how changes in province-level Sales Price and Jeonse Price affect divorce rates in the period from 1997 to 2014 using Panel Fixed Effect Model. We find that the variation in Sales Price Indices positively impacts on divorce rate; also the growth in ratio of Jeonse to Sales Price negatively affects the divorce rate in Korea. However, the Jeonse price indices growth have little effect on divorce rate. This implies that the coefficient of the growth in ratio of Jeonse to Sales Price represent negative signed value due to an a overwhelming Sales price. These results suggest that the difference between change in Sales Price and Jeonse Price fails to explain the changes in divorce rates.
