Abstract

Upcycled products, which are made by adding new value to existing products using discarded waste materials, are one of the representative ways for companies to minimize social problems and encourage consumers to adopt eco-friendly consumption. By launching upcycled products, companies can create social value and induce positive responses from consumers. However, upcycled products are generally more expensive than other products, which may make consumers hesitant to purchase them. Therefore, investigating consumers’ perceptions of price information for upcycled products is very important from both academic and practical perspectives. This study examines whether consumers’ perception of the price of upcycled products is divided into benefits and costs, and whether self-regulatory focus and brand trust affect consumer perception. The results of Study 1 show that consumers with a promotion focus perceive the price of upcycled products as benefits, so the price level has a positive effect on purchase intention, while those with a prevention focus perceive the price as costs, so the price level has a negative effect on purchase intention. And Study 2, which investigated the role of brand trust, suggests that brand trust transforms consumers' price perception into benefits rather than costs. In other words, brand trust allows consumers to perceive the price of upcycled products as benefits, so consumers' purchase intentions are more positive when the price level is high rather than when it is low. Finally, we suggest academic and practical implications through the experimental results of this study.
