Abstract
Recently, Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as an effective and interactive method for providing visual product information. Based on telepresence theory and consumer control theory, this study aims to deepen the understanding of 1) the impact of AR experiences on consumers’ purchase intentions and attitudes towards products in the online and mobile shopping environment, and 2) to identify possible mediators of the relationship. Specifically, the current study focuses on the effect of local presence, which is the concept of “being there” in virtual spaces. An experimental survey was conducted on 106 participants to examine the suggested hypotheses. Using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) structural model, the results confirmed that AR experiences increase consumers’ sense of control, leading to positive attitudes towards products and higher purchase intentions. This study extends the theoretical discussion on understanding consumers’ experiences in digital shopping environments and highlights the important role of local presence and consumer control. Moreover, considering AR as an effective marketing channel in digital shopping environments, the current study provides meaningful managerial insights for digital marketers on how to enhance positive product attitudes and purchase intentions through AR experiences.
