Abstract

With the emergence of delivery apps after COVID-19, consumers were used to ordering and consuming food through delivery rather than eating out, but they are rapidly returning to offline consumption after the end of the pandemic. When consumers evaluate restaurants, they might overlook or underestimate the time it takes to get to a restaurant, transportation costs, and especially the waiting time for famous restaurants. Despite experiencing that it is not free to reduce the travel time and waiting time of consumers by paying for a delivery fee through a delivery app, consumers seem to perceive the size of the opportunity cost of time as less than the actual value. The purpose of this study is to examine how consumers' evaluation of restaurants differs when the value of travel time and waiting time is recognized as an opportunity cost and presented in either aggregated or segregated form. Specifically, the presented value of opportunity cost according to time was the minimum hourly wage, and consumers' intention to use and evaluation of experience was compared. As a result of the analysis, there was no difference in the main effects of aggregation and separation, and when presented as an opportunity cost rather than the control group, the evaluation of the restaurant experience was high. This result might be due to that consumers give more value to the restaurant's experience because they invest more time.
