Abstract

In general, a virtual training system (VTS) is known as a more effective training medium than traditional instructional media such as papers, slides, and videos. However, on the vocational training situations, the trainee’s awareness, attitude, and even learning effect can differ from the characteristics of the trainees, in particular their careers. In this vein, this study aimed to develop a VTS for automobile maintenance, which is a representative field with broad interests in the vocational training using VR technology and then to verify the developed VTS’s educational usefulness through the trainee’s career-related reaction evaluation. For this purpose, we developed the automobile maintenance VTS, consisting of an HMD, two VR controllers, and a training content. After that, we conducted the Kirkpatrick’s reaction evaluation in order to closely understand the trainee’s awareness about the developed VTS, focused on three evaluation areas such as the training, media, and content. Eleven novices (college students who learn automobile maintenance without the previous job experiences) and ten skilled workers (mechanic mechanics who have had automobile maintenance for more than 10 years) participated in this evaluation. Results indicated that all trainees respond positively to the developed VTS, and skilled workers showed more positive responses than novices without only three-questions. The significant differences between novices and skilled workers also revealed in ‘training level of relevancy’ (Z=-2.497, p=0.024) and ‘clarity of information’ (Z=-2.16, p=0.043). Based on these results, we discussed the implications for the effective development and utilization of the automobile maintenance VTS.
