Abstract

This study tried to explore the participation variables of what participation in distance education is and how it can be measured. By analyzing previous studies, the participation stages according to the definition of distance education participation were set as motivation, exploration, interaction, and reflection, and seven participation variables were presented for each stage of participation. Its adequacy and validity were verified by 23 experts, and a Analytic Hierarchy Process was performed to evaluate the relative importance between participation variables of distance education. It was confirmed that each of the four distance education participation stages and participation variables set in this study secured validity. The relative importance values among the participation variable for sdistance education were high in the order of qualitative level of reflection writing, qualitative level of posted writing, number of posted writing, lengths of posted writing, time spent, read messages, and number of logins. The results of this study can serve as a conceptual basis for empirically verifying learner participation by revealing which participation variables are more appropriate to measure the degree of participation in distance education at universities.
