Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore parents’ strategies for developing their children’s media literacy competency in an informal learning environment through a systematic literature review of previous domestic studies. For this purpose, the results of individual studies were synthesized through a meta-aggregative approach to qualitative studies on the media literacy practice of children and adolescents and their parents’ guidance experience or perception in the context of informal learning. In accordance with the systematic literature analysis procedure, a total of 19 papers were selected for analysis through literature search, selection, and quality evaluation, and analysis was conducted based on the data extraction and synthesis procedure of the meta-aggregative approach. As a result, a total of 93 results were extracted, and 16 categories were derived from the results extracted through the categorization process. Consequently, 6 parents’ strategies are emerged; (1) Selection and provision of media suitable for the child’s needs and characteristics, (2) Acquisition of knowledge about children’s media activities and agreement between caregivers, (3) Creating a media plan considering family context and place through discussion with family members, (4) Practice the guidance to balance media use through the interaction of family, (5) Respect your child as an active media user and Create an environment where you can intervene and assist if necessary, (6) Using media as a competency development tool for your children. Based on these research results, implications for parents, policies, and follow-up studies were presented.
