Abstract
Despite the importance of physics as a fundamental literacy in intelligent information society, many students face challenges in learning physics concepts. Although various digital learning support tools have been utilized to address these difficulties, merely using these tools alone may not effectively facilitate students’ conceptual change. Digital tools can maximize their effectiveness when integrated with constructivist approaches that help students actively participate in inquiry-based learning to construct scientific concepts. This study developed a prototype simulation-based AI system supporting physics inquiry processes based on the 5E learning cycle, a constructivist science teaching and learning model. Using design and development research methodology, the system was systematically developed and evaluated for usability with six users. Usability evaluation revealed several strengths of the system, including a step-by-step learning experience, visualization of physics laws through simulations, and adaptive feedback provided by the AI tutor. However, limitations such as a lack of intuitive interface design and insufficient guidance for simulation use were identified. The final prototype system consists of five learning stages, each featuring customized AI tutors with distinct roles to provide adaptive learner support. Additionally, a simulation code-generating AI visualizes learners’ pre-conceptions to promote cognitive conflict, facilitating conceptual change. This study is significant in that it leverages rapidly evolving AI technologies to create an effective physics inquiry learning environment based on scientific learning theories.
