Abstract

This study aims to develop a physics experiment simulator for elementary schools based on immersive virtual reality (VR) and hand-tracking (HT) technology and explore its applicability. The proposed VR–HT simulator consists of an orientation simulation and six experimental simulations for the “Weight of Objects” unit in the third and fourth grade elementary curricula. The orientation simulation is intended to familiarize oneself with basic functions in performing simulation experiments, and six experimental simulations that applied the principles of spring balance and leveling experiments in the force and motion domains of physics are created. The research proceeded through the stages of simulator development, effectiveness verification scale development, simulator application, and simulator effectiveness verification. In particular, the simulator development stage was further divided into detailed stages of analysis, design, development, application, and evaluation. The study verified the applicability of the proposed VR–HT simulator by conducting a conceptual understanding survey and user evaluation on fifth-grade elementary school students. The results demonstrated improved learners’ understanding of the principles of spring balance and concepts of leveling, and the simulator received many positive user evaluations compared with conventional scientific experiments.
