Abstract

This study explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in science education, recognizing the changing educational environment due to rapid technological advancement. Analysis of AI applications in science education revealed that while numerous studies focused on students directly implementing and utilizing AI technologies to achieve science learning objectives, several limitations were identified: AI usage remains largely supportive, its application in secondary science education is relatively limited, and there are difficulties in connecting AI outcomes with scientific concepts and principles. To address these limitations in secondary science education, this study proposes science inquiry activities incorporating explainable AI (XAI). The proposed activities provide an environment where secondary school students can actively utilize AI while developing scientific problem-solving skills and enhance their adaptability to digital educational environments. This research carries significance in offering a framework for active AI engagement in science classrooms. It is anticipated that this initiative will catalyze the development of diverse AI technology applications aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of science education.
