Abstract
This study examined patterns in online learning behaviors through time-series analysis of log data. It also explored the relationship between online behaviors and students' motivational and goal-related attributes by analyzing their association with self-reported survey responses. Time-series clustering was applied using e-book accesses data recorded over a 12-week online course. Weekly login frequency, access to the learning statistics page, and academic achievement were analyzed based on the identified learning patterns. Furthermore, differences in learning motivation (intrinsic value, utility value, cost, and self-efficacy) and achievement goals (mastery, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance) were examined across learning types. The key findings are as follows. First, time-series clustering identified three types of online learners: active learning sustainers (10.2%), passive learning sustainers (42.7%), and passive learning procrastinators (47.1%). Second, online behavioral characteristics and academic achievement varied by learning type. Third, while perceived cost in learning motivation showed minor differences, performance-approach and performance-avoidance goals differed significantly among groups. These findings highlight the importance of leveraging the temporal dynamics of log data and integrating log-based insights with self-reported measures for a more comprehensive understanding of online learning behaviors.
