Abstract
This study empirically examined the effects of argumentative interactions with persona-based ChatGPT on learners’ argumentative writing, tolerant attitude, and learning engagement. Fifty-three Korean undergraduate and graduate learners were divided into two groups: an experimental group of 27 participants interacted with persona-based ChatGPT and a control group of 26 participants interacted with regular ChatGPT without persona. Quantitative and qualitative analyses assessed argumentative writing, tolerant attitude, learning engagement, interaction patterns, as well as participants’ experiences. The main findings are as follows. First, both groups significantly improved their argumentative writing, with no significant difference by persona presence. Second, among sub-factors of tolerant attitude, open attitude significantly increased in both groups, whereas empathetic attitude showed no significant change in either group. Third, the experimental group reported significantly higher learning engagement compared to the control group. Fourth, the experimental group exhibited more creative and divergent argumentative patterns, while the control group showed more convergent, evidence-focused patterns. Fifth, interview analyses revealed mixed evaluations of persona-based ChatGPT. Participants noted its effectiveness in promoting comprehension of diverse perspectives, activating higher-order thinking, and fostering emotional engagement, but also pointed out that an excessively consistent persona stance could impede empathy. This study demonstrates the potential of persona-based ChatGPT to enhance learners’ academic performance and suggests its promise for supporting the affective domain.
