Abstract
This study examined how undergraduate students used ChatGPT in self-directed learning contexts across different assignment structures and problem-solving stages. Assignments were categorized as structured, semi-structured, or ill-structured, and the problem-solving process was divided into planning, execution, and reflection. Students’ ChatGPT prompts were analyzed using Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) to compare usage patterns. Distinct differences appeared by assignment structure: structured assignments showed consistent remembering–understanding–applying connections; semi-structured assignments were dominated by remembering–understanding patterns; and ill-structured assignments included connections like understanding–analyzing and applying–idea generation, though many still relied on remembering and understanding. Across problem-solving stages, patterns also varied: planning was marked by remembering– understanding connections; execution by strong remembering–understanding–applying links; and reflection by central applying–evaluating connections. These findings indicate that ChatGPT can serve as a tool for expanding students’ thinking beyond simple information provision. The results provide empirical foundations for developing AI use strategies and informing instructional design.
