Abstract
Contemporary learners demonstrate fluency in digital media use; however, such technical proficiency does not necessarily entail the capacity to critically interpret and ethically engage with media content. Adolescents require media literacy education that extends beyond functional skills to include reflective engagement and understanding of broader social and economic contexts. This study aims to lay the groundwork for implementing a comprehensive and systematic approach to media literacy education within the national curriculum. Employing a scoping review methodology, this research analyzes trends in school-based media literacy education programs over the past decade (2015-March 2025). A total of 17 studies were systematically reviewed to examine research trends, media types, underlying perspectives, and effectiveness evaluation methods. The findings highlight three critical implications: (1) the need to develop media literacy programs that reflect diverse perspectives on media; (2) the importance of designing programs that account for students' actual media usage habits and contexts; and (3) the necessity of balancing subcomponents of media literacy within instructional content. This study offers theoretical and practical insights into developing feasible school-based media literacy programs and provides foundational data to inform future curriculum-linked research and program design.
