Abstract
Blended learning is gaining attention as a new normal in future education. The COVID-19 pandemic increased familiarity with online learning, while emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse platforms have further diversified blended learning practices. Despite criticism regarding its conceptual ambiguity, ongoing efforts have sought to conceptualize and classify blended learning through various frameworks. This study proposes future directions for the expansion and development of blended learning by comparing and analyzing existing classification models. Specifically, it examines four representative frameworks-Singh (2003), Graham (2006), Margulieux et al. (2016), and Horn and Staker (2015)-and reinterprets blended learning not merely as a mixture of online and offline modes but as a dynamic system that can reconfigure and expand depending on instructional conditions. Based on this analysis, blended learning is reorganized into five design dimensions: space, time, grouping, instructional activities, and educational technology. These dimensions support dynamic blending by enabling instructors to select heterogeneous activities, adjust their weighting, and redesign sequences or participation modes as learning unfolds. This study advances a conceptual transition from a static Mix approach to a Dynamics approach emphasizing adaptability, iterative restructuring, and interaction-driven evolution. The findings provide a conceptual foundation for designing blended learning in AI-supported classrooms and highlight the need for future empirical research on dynamic reconfiguration in authentic classroom contexts.
