Abstract
This study analyzes the representation of foreign immigrants in Eduardo Mendoza’s Nameless Detective pentalogy through an interdisciplinary framework encompassing literature, social studies, economics, and cultural studies. Reflecting the rise of immigration since the 1980s—particularly in multicultural Barcelona—Mendoza’s works transform immigrant characters from peripheral figures to active supporting roles. The analysis draws on Bourdieu’s theory of social capital, Hall’s concepts of “Othering” and cultural identity, Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, and Wallerstein’s world-systems theory to examine African, Chinese, Pakistani, and Dominican characters in terms of their socio-economic roles, cultural agency, and integration. The expansion of self-employment within the Chinese community illustrates how literature can capture structural change. These findings contribute to debates on immigrant visibility, multiculturalism, and the role of fiction in interpreting contemporary Spanish society.
