Abstract
This study examined challenges faced by undergraduates in team project courses and explored opportunities for AI-based support. A survey was conducted with 60 undergraduates enrolled in a team project course at a regional university in the second semester of 2024, and 18 of them participated in follow-up interviews. The survey and interview data were first analyzed independently-either quantitatively or qualitatively, respectively-and were later integrated using a framework that emphasized major components of team projects. Findings showed that students usually worked in instructor-assigned teams but volunteered for their roles. Projects mainly involved problem-solving or collaborative research, with most teams having fewer than six members. Students frequently used messengers, shared drives, and co-editing platforms for collaboration. Challenges included insufficient peer participation, unequal role distribution, communication barriers, and perceptions of unfair assessment. Students often managed these issues passively, relying on conflict avoidance or personal responsibility rather than collective problem-solving. Based on these findings, this paper proposes AI-driven functionalities to support all phases of team projects: team formation and role recommendation, schedule coordination, conflict detection with mediation guidance, contribution tracking, and bias-aware assessment. These tools aim to enhance interaction among team members and extend AI’s role to support collaborative activities beyond individualized assistance.
