Abstract
While students in South Korea have globally demonstrated high performance in mathematics, they continue to show low levels of affective achievements such as interest and confidence in mathematics. As a strategic to solve this problem, game-based learning has gained increasing attention for its potential to enhance students’ interest and engagement in mathematics. However, most existing educational games rely primarily on extrinsic rewards and competition, failing foster and sustain intrinsic motivation. To address this limitation, this study aims to develop a mathematics educational game based on self-determination theory (SDT) to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation. We derived design principles based on SDT, developed a mathematics educational game according to these principles, and examined its effectiveness through both quantitative and qualitative analyses. A design-based research (DBR) methodology was employed to generate iterative and practical solution while narrowing the gap between the research and classroom contexts. As a result, we developed the design principles including 3 components, 6 principles, and 17 specific guidelines. The educational game, implemented with 73 middle school students, was effective across all time points’ a post test and a delayed post test, for both high and middle-level achievements students. In addition, qualitative thematic analysis of interview data yielded four themes related to the students’ perceived effectiveness and limitations on the game. This study showed that well-designed educational games can effectively improve learners’ intrinsic motivation.
