Abstract

This study examines how student engagement mediates the relationship between student characteristics and academic achievement in an online active learning course. Engagement was measured by the amount of time students talked during class, distinguishing between main-stage (whole-class discussion) and small-group talk time. We examined whether student characteristics such as prior active learning experience, perceived English proficiency, and task value were associated with achievement through the mediating role of talk time. Data from 78 undergraduates enrolled in an online active learning course revealed that main-stage talk time served as a significant mediator. Specifically, both prior active learning experience and perceived English proficiency were positively related to main-stage talk time, which in turn was associated with higher levels of achievement. In contrast, task value showed a direct positive effect on achievement but no indirect effect through talk time. Small-group talk time did not exhibit any significant mediating role. These findings underscore the central importance of student engagement in active learning and call for instructor strategies and course designs that foster such engagement.
