Abstract
Benacerraf's argument of number's being non-unique is one of the strong disputations against mathematical platonism. As far as I have noticed, there are 4 kinds of responses to this non-uniqueness argument; the attempts of Wright and Hale's Neo-Fregeanism, Shapiro's ante rem Structuralism, Balaguer's Full-blooded Platonism, and Zalta's Principled Platonism. Among these, Zalta's Principled Platonism is very difficult to be counted as a genuine platonism. Neo-Fregeanism has some serious difficulties in overcoming the problem of non-uniqueness. Even though Balaguer's view seems to overcome the non-uniqueness problem, it has serious defects concerning an adequate explanation of our knowledge about and referring to numbers. Therefore, Shapiro's view can be evaluated to provide the best solutions, among the platonist views proposed so far, to the problems of the number's non- uniqueness and an adequate explanation of mathematical knowledge.
