Abstract
In this paper, I criticize Hausman's argument for the deterministic theory of causation and the deterministic causation of probabilities in terms of which to explicate the relation between type-level causation and token-level causation. Hausman(1998) argues that, holding the deterministic theory of causation and the deterministic causation of probabilities, type-level causation is a generalization of token-level causation; type-level causation is reduced to, or derived from, token-level causation. I pose a problem for Hausman's theory while putting forth counterexamples to his argument. The reason Hausman's theory confronts the problem is that he explicates the relation between the two levels of causation in the single way, that is, in terms of only the relation between variables without considering causal connection intrinsic in token-level causation. I argue that the relation between the two levels of causation should be carved up in many different ways with regard to explication, explanation, and prediction. In particular, I show that token-level causation depends conceptually on type-level causation.
