선우환 교수(이하, 선우환)는 그의 최근 책에서 논리적 복합 명제의 참에 대한 근거주의적 견해(이하, 근거주의)에 대한 흥미로운 반대를 제기한다. 이 논문의 목적은 선우환 교수의 반대로부터 근거주의를 옹호하는 것이다. 선우환은 특정 조건이 성립하는 상황에서 선언 명제의 참과 존재 양화 명제의참에 대한 근거주의는 반례에 직면함을 논증한다. 선우환의 반례는 일견 직관적 설득력을 가지는 것으로 보이나, 필자는 근거주의 주장을 명확히 이해하면이 반례가 성공적이지 않다는 것을 논증한다. 이를 위해 필자는 우선 현재 맥락의 근거주의에서 말하는 근거관계의 본성을 근거관계의 관계항에 대한 고찰을 통해 설명하고, 이를 바탕으로 선우환의 반례가 근거주의에 문제를 제기하는 데에 왜 성공하지 못하는지 설명한다.
Abstract
In his recent book, Professor Sunwoo has raised an interesting objection to a grounding-theoretical account for the truth of logically complex propositions. The aim of the paper is to defend the grounding-theoretic account against Professor Sunwoo’s objection. He argues that the grounding-theoretical account vis-à-vis disjunctive propositions and existential quantificational propositions breaks down by putting forward counterexamples. I argue that despite the appearances to the contrary, a close examination of the nature of grounding shows that his counterexamples fail. To this end, I offer an in-depth explication of grounding by looking closely what the nature of its relata is and explain where Professor Sunwoo’s objection goes wrong.
