Abstract
In science, it is most important to determine what evidence is adequate for hypotheses at hand. For that, two of the promising theories are Achinstein's theory of explanatory connections and Mayo's theory of severe tests. While both of them are opposed to standard Bayesianism on the question, they are usually regarded to be conflicting each other. Nevertheless, with more careful analyses, it is revealed that they have one thing important in common, and so that they can learn more from each other through it. The common thing is just their concerns over certain explanatory linkages between evidence and hypotheses. Then, is it possible for us to accept both of the theories? Unfortunately, Achinstein's theory leads to a predicament thought not to be overcome. That is the question about hypotheses of a particular instance which have passed severe tests. Mayo's theory with no such weakness is naturally preferable to Achinstein's. As above, it is the aim of this paper to strengthen Mayo's theory further beyond standard Bayesian theories, comparing it with Achinstein's. On the way, it is worth noting that the notion of what I call a "mechanism generating evidence-hypotheses" plays a crucial role.
