Abstract

In science, it is not rare that, even on the same empirical phenomena, a plurality of theories are put forth in the form of hypotheses, each of which can explain or predict them. Thus, the problem of theory choice, i.e., the question of which of the theories should be chosen is very important and interesting for the philosophy of science as well as science itself. Regarding the problem, the purpose of this paper is to criticize particularly Achinstein's negative view of the Whewellian way. Although the way called "Consilience of Inductions" is already widely known, interestingly, Achinstein explicates it newly in terms of probability and claims that it does not play the right role for the question at issue. However, as the claim is only due to his own peculiar Bayesianism, it is not a correct evaluation of the Whewellian way. In this paper, it is shown that Whewell's Consilience can be most properly explicated by way of what Mayo calls "Severe Tests", and therefore how the explication can contribute rightly to the theory-choice problem.
