본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 고등학교 영어 교과서의 문법 활동 유형 분석과 문법 연습 유형에 대한 학습자의 선호도를 파악하는 것이다. 대상 영어 교과서는 교육부의 검정을 통과한 총 18권을 분석하였고, 선호하는 문법 연습의 유형에 대해 질문하는 설문지에는 240명의 학습자들이 응답하였다. 연구 결과 2015 개정 교육과정을 기반으로 한 교과서의 '의미초점' 문법 활동 비율은 46%(n = 435)이었고 이는 2009 개정 교육과정을 기반으로 한 교과서의 37%(n = 366)에 비하여 비율이 상승한 것을 보여주고 있다. 문법 활동 유형들 중에서, '빈칸을 채우는 활동'과 '대화를 통한 문법 공부'는 형태초점과 의미초점 활동 중 가장 빈번한 활동이었다. 학습자의 답변은 의미초점 활동보다 형태초점 활동을 다소 더 선호한다는 것을 보여주었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 본 연구는 교과서 개발자들이 형태와 의미초점 활동의 균형을 맞추고, 학습자들이 교실에서 다양한 방식으로 문법을 공부할 수 있도록 교과서에 사용할 다양한 새로운 유형의 문법 활동을 지속적으로 개발해야 한다고 제안한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the frequency of different types of grammar activities in English textbooks and learners’ preferences for particular types. A total of 18 English textbooks certified by the Ministry of Education in Korea for high school students were analyzed and 240 learners took part in the questionnaire asking about their preferred types of grammar exercises. The results reveal a greater proportion of ‘meaning-focused’ grammar activities in textbooks based on the 2015 national curriculum compared to those based on the 2009 national curriculum: 46% (n = 435) and 37% (n = 366) respectively. Among the types, ‘gap-filling’ and ‘studying grammar through conversation’ were the most frequent form-focused and meaning-focused activities. The learners’ responses showed that they slightly preferred form-focused to meaning-focused activities. Based on the findings, this study suggests that textbook developers should balance form- and meaning-focused activities and try to develop various new types of grammar activities for use in textbooks so that learners can study grammar in various ways in the classroom.
