초록
Although it is often noticed that even advanced level learners of English have trouble with their speaking abilities in producing well-organized and situationally appropriate discourse, the trouble sources have not gained enough attention in the field of second/foreign language discourse. The present study aims at identifying the factors that contribute to the seemingly disorganized and meandering sequences of language learners' talk in their oral proficiency interview (OPI hereafter). The OPI responses from 28 4th year college English learners who took two communicative English classes were audio-recorded for a close analysis of the discourse features. The results from the close examination of the responses revealed some trouble sources in three different areas: 1) coherence, 2) cohesion, and 3) elaboration. In this paper each aspect of difficulty is discussed in detail based on the excerpts from the OPI data. The paper argues that these three patterns found in the learners' discourse are important indications of the learners' discourse competence and should be attended to and addressed in teaching language learners' discourse skills.

Although it is often noticed that even advanced level learners of English have trouble with their speaking abilities in producing well-organized and situationally appropriate discourse, the trouble sources have not gained enough attention in the field of second/foreign language discourse. In this paper each aspect of difficulty is discussed in detail based on the excerpts from the OPI data. The paper argues that these three patterns found in the learners' discourse are important indications of the learners' discourse competence and should be attended to and addressed in teaching language learners' discourse skills.
