Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find ways to deal with a variety of problems arising in the contemporary Korean society which has rapidly become multicultural since the outset of the 21st century. It puts emphasis on ensuring social circumstances in which people with different cultural and ethnic back grounds and native Koreans, including those who fled North Korea to settle down in the South, can be brought together as a Korean nation through multicultural education that is based on balanced respects of cultural diversity and community integration. It is an undeniable reality that the speed with which the number of culturally and ethnically different minorities is growing has been so fast that the Korean system has not been able to effectively prepare itself for that situation. Accordingly, without everyone's much attention, it has given rise to various multicultural issues, most of them entwined, from unfair treatment to even, in some isolated cases, though, encroachment on human rights of the culturally, economically and ethnically less privileged. That compels us legal, institutional and moral obligations to protect and help them integrate into the Korean society so as to let them feel secure as the same Korean nation. To derive basic information to help solve the problems, the study traces what made these people come to this land and analyzes structural types of multicultural families. The multicultural problems that develop in the proc- ess of and after their settlement in Korea are also examined. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests multicultural education systemized more with a new set of teaching methods and government-level policy measures that can be of help in promoting social unity while respecting cultural pluralism among different ethnic groups. The importance of multicultural education reflecting the distinctiveness of each ethnic group and closely connected with local community projects aimed at facilitating community integration are especially stressed.
