Abstract
In these days, the approach to 'consumer(or customer)-student' in university is a leading education policy of a majority of countries. Regrettably, the Korean researchers pay relatively little attention to challenging today's tendency towards conception of consumer-student. For that reason, by examining how the conception of consumer-student can affect the education in university, and by examining educational problems underlying premises of consumer-student, I hope to show what are the limits and difficulties of the approach to consumer-student. I order to achieve this purpose, in the second chapter, I explored the social and political background of the approach of consumer-student and the nature of consumer-student. In the third chapter, I discussed what negative consequences the approach could have. The approach results in grade inflation, populism, poor academic standards, contractual relationship between professor and student, and excessive investment in educational facilities. In the fourth chapter, I discuss in turn what wrongs is made in the logic premises that justify the approach to consumer-student. Ultimately, the spread of consumerism in university could produce 'pedagogy of discomfort', short-sighted student choice, passive learner, and a decline in educational quality. Therefore, we need to re-change the language of the market, such as consumer, to language of education in the education area.
