Han, S.W., Yoon, J.R. Effect of rehabilitation exercise and backward walking and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on the quadriceps muscle function in patients with patellofemoral pain pyndrome. Exercise Science. 17(4): 463-472, 2008. The purpose of this study was to effects of backward walking on incline treadmill and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on the lower extremity muscle function in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. A total of 21 consecutive patients were randomized assign to either a group using backward walking on incline treadmill(N=7, male=4, female=3) and a group neuromuscular electrical stimulation(N=7, male=4, female=3), a group combined(N=7, male=4, female=3). The effects of 8weeks of rehabilitation program that consisted of physical therapy and training program five times a weeks. The training program consisted of four step, each step duration two weeks. Muscle function were evaluated in this study at the time of the initial physical examination at the four weeks, at the end of the rehabilitation program period. All groups showed significant improvements in muscle strengthening and power, endurance of the rehabilitation program period at 60 and 180, 300°/sec(p>.05), there was different between periods in peak torque % body weight at 60°/sec, average power at 180°/sec, total work % body weight at 300°/sec, but was no different between groups. All groups showed significant decrease in pain scale of the rehabilitation program period, there was no different between groups in pain scale. The effect of exercise in the rehabilitation program of quadriceps functions is to reduce the pain, to strengthen the knee extensor and functional capacity performance in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
