Abstract

The study was designed to compare the electromyographic activity(EMG) of vastus medialis oblique(VMO), rectus femoris(RF), and vastus lateralis(VL) during lunge according to ankle positions, i.e., internal rotation 30°, neutral, and external rotation 30°, in ssireum players with patellofemoral pain syndrome(PFPS: n=10) and without PFPS(non PFPS; NPFPS: n=11). The EMG signals were expressed by the root mean square(RMS) and integrated electromyography(IEMG) values. Main results were as follows: 1) EMG of VMO, RF, and VL was tend to be lower in PFPS compared to NPFPS(82.9∼94.8%). EMG of RF and VL with external rotation was significantly higher the results with internal rotation and neutral position. 2) There was significant main effect of position in EMG activity of RF when expressed by both RMS(P=.011) and IEMG(P=.000). There was significant main effect of position(P=.012) and interaction between group and position(P=.001) in EMG activity of VL when expressed by IEMG. 3) EMG activity of VMO was higher than EMG activity of VL in both groups. The ratio of VMO to VL was 117.0% and 118.2% when expressed by RMS and IEMG, respectively, in PFPS group. The ratio of VMO to VL was 112.2% and 111.8% when expressed by RMS and IEMG, respectively, in NPFPS group. It was concluded that EMG activity was reduced due to the PFPS and that performing lunge with external rotated position would be helpful to increase muscular activation level.
