Abstract

Stock market simulation or mock trading is a program designed to help investors understand stock markets and test their own investment strategies with virtual money before they start investing in stocks with real money. There are growing number of professors (teachers) who utilize stock market simulation in class for the purpose of enhancing student learning by increasing enjoyment students derive from the stock trading. The primary focus of the study is to investigate the positive effect of playing stock market simulation on college students' learning. Students simulated stock trading on their own for three months by using a mobile application. Even after one month from the end of the stock market simulation activity, students retained most of the knowledge they gained during their activities, and their knowledge measured at the end of the semester was significantly improved compared to the beginning of the semester, supporting the hypothesis that playing stock market simulation had a positive impact on student learning of concepts related to investment. Test score gain is estimated as a decreasing function of pre-test knowledge score, implying that catch up in learning has greatly reduced knowledge deviation among students at the end of the semester. Regression results also reveals that student’s concern about economic matters contributes to the knowledge acquisition.
