Abstract
Effect of regular swimming training on thickness of the aortic wall & endothelium-derived nitric oxide activity in L-NAME induced hypertensive rats. Exercise Science, 13(2): 189-200, 2004. The aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive effect of swimming training in nitric oxide synthase inhibitor-induced hypertensive rats by assessment of thickness of the aortic wall and plasma level of endothelium-derived nitric oxide activity. Hypertension was induced by injection (I.P) of, Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 50 mgkg-1day-1) to male Sprague-Dawley rats. Experimental groups (n=40) were control group (Con: n=10), control+L-NAME group (L-Con: n=10), L-NAME+ swimming group (L-Ex: n=10) and swimming group (Ex n= 10). Animal in swimming groups were subjected to swim- ming training 5times/week with duration of 30 minutes for 8 weeks. Blood pressure were monitored during experi- mental periods. The animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks, and thickness of the aortic wall and plasma level of endothelium-derived nitrite level was measured. The results of this study showed blood pressure decreased signifi- cantly in L-Exe group at 8 weeks(p<.001). Plasma nitrite level was significantly decreased in L-Con group(<.001). nitrite level was significantly increasern Ex than Con group (p<.05). Area of the aortic lumen was Smaller L-Con than L-Ex and Ex group (p<.001). L-Ex was significantly lager than Con groups (p<.05). The thickness of the aortic wall was decreased in three group than L-Con groups(p<.001). According to above, the author concluded that regular swimming have antihypertensive effects by increase of nitric oxide activity and attenuation of the structural alteration of the aortic wall in L-NAME induced hypertensive rats.
