Abstract
Kim, J.K., & Roh, S.K. Effects of level and downhill running on the creatine kinase activity, leukocytes, and expression of serum heat shock protein 72. Exercise Science, 16(2): 115-124, 2007. This study was to investigate the effects of level and downhill running on the creatine kinase(CK) activity, leukocytes, and expression of serum heat shock protein 72(HSP72). Ten healthy male subjects ran on a treadmill (level and -12% downhill, respectively) for 60 minutes at a work load corresponding to 80% of heart rate reserve. Blood was sampled from a forearm vein at rest, immediately postexercise, and 1h, 4h, 24h after exercise. These samples were analyzed for CK activity, counts of leukocytes and lymphocytes, and serum HSP72 contents. There was a significant increase in plasma CK activity after exercise for both running types and downhill running induced more elevation of CK activity at 4h, 24h postexercise compared with level running. There were similar alterations of leukocytosis and lymphocytosis after exercise in level and downhill running. There was a no significant different in postexercise counts of leukocytes and lymphocytes between exercise types. And also, In expression of serum HSP72, there was no significant difference between exercise types. But similar patterns of changes of serum HSP72 expression, leukocytes, and lymphocytes were shown. In conclusion, although downhill running significantly induced muscle damage, there were no significant differences in exercise-induced alteration of leukocytes and lymphocytes, and expression of serum HSP72, as time trial after exercise, between exercise types. These results suggested that exercise-induced serum HSP72 may be influenced by alteration of leukocytes, not by muscle damage.
