Abstract
This study aimed to explore the meaning and expectations of freshmen regarding their university lives based on their experiences. Interviews were conducted with 12 freshmen from S University in Sejong City. Through qualitative analysis of the collected data, three main categories were derived: "Changes in Life," "Adaptation to Changes," and "Blueprint for the Future." Regarding "Changes in Life," two subcategories were identified. Three subcategories emerged for “Adaptation to Changes,” while "Blueprint for the Future" consisted of two subcategories. The findings revealed that freshmen experienced the coexistence of fulfillment from living a proactive life with autonomy and self-direction as adults and anxiety stemming from their immature self-regulation skills. However, those who accepted these changes as part of their lives gradually adapted to their studies, social relationships, and living environment. In contrast, some freshmen continued to experience confusion and anxiety, leading to a sense of isolation at university. Nevertheless, freshmen who reached a stable phase as students and adults established new goals at university, such as finding a career path that aligns with their aptitudes and interests and securing employment in a stable occupation. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need to enhance counseling services to provide psychological stability to freshmen struggling with university adaptation. Additionally, it highlights the necessity of developing educational programs aimed at supporting career exploration and job preparation, which many freshmen perceive as the primary goal of higher education.
