Abstract
· Research topics: This study aims to explore college students' experiences of social support and their adaptation to college life, providing practical suggestions for institutional interventions at the university level. · Research background: Adaptation to college life is a critical indicator of academic achievement and social success. Given the significant role of social support—both psychological and social—in facilitating adaptation, this study investigates the interplay between these experiences. · Differences from prior research: Building on existing studies that address the positive impact of social support on college adaptation, this research uniquely examines the specific experiences of emotional, informational, material, and appraisal support among students at a university in the Chungcheong region, thereby offering a nuanced perspective on their adaptation process. · Research method: Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight undergraduate students from A university. Thematic analysis was conducted using an inductive approach to identify key themes and experiences. · Research results: The findings revealed that students experienced diverse forms of social support—emotional, informational, material, and appraisal—provided by professors, peers, and family members. These supports contributed significantly to emotional stability and sustained academic engagement throughout their college journey. · Contribution points and expected effects: The study offers practical implications for developing tailored support programs to enhance students' adaptation at the institutional level, thereby contributing to student success and retention.
