Abstract
This study aims to critically investigate how AI technology has been translated into an entity driving specific forms of school reform within media discourses in South Korea, and which human and non-human actors have been involved in such translation processes, by thinking with Actor-Network Theory. To this end, a total of 224 articles published after March 2016 by three major South Korean daily newspapers (The Chosun Ilbo, The JoongAng, and Hankyoreh) were collected and analyzed through an ANT-informed approach. The results show the ways AI technology has been enacted as ‘multiple’ realities — that is, as multiple nonhuman agencies driving school reforms in different directions: (1) as a ‘competitor’ to humans necessitating new, innovative modes of curriculum and pedagogy, (2) as a ‘companion’ to humans demanding the introduction of specific subject matters, and (3) as a ‘problem-solver’ providing all students with one-to-one customized education. These enactments depend on the heterogeneous, more-than-human components of the actor-networks generated through media discourses and their relational dynamics. This suggests that AI technology, as a driver of school reform, is always in a continual process of making and unmaking, engaging in a series of translations (and betrayals) within these actor-networks. Based on these results, the study discusses the need to reconceptualize what constitutes ‘the educational’ and to expand the meaning of ‘critical’ approaches in the context of educational research.
