Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of mitophagy-related factors such as p53, NF-κB and PGC-1α protein in the skeletal muscle of Sprague-Dawley rats after an acute endurance exercise(20 m/min, 0°, 60 min, recovery 2 or 4 hours) at 70 % VO2max intensity. The expression of p53, NF-κB and PGC-1α protein in skeletal muscle was analyzed through the method of Western blotting. The expression of p53 protein was significantly increased in both 2- and 4-hour recovery period groups compared with before exercise in each of the soleus and EDL muscle. RelA/p65 protein was significantly increased in the soleus muscle during the recovery period compared with before exercise, but not remarkably increased in EDL muscle. PGC-1α protein was significantly increased in the soleus muscle in the only 2-hour recovery period group compared with before exercise, and increased in both 2- and 4-hour recovery period groups in EDL muscle. The results suggest that the acute endurance exercise may have induced mitochondrial mitophagy, leading to the expression of p53, NF-κB and PGC-1α in skeletal muscle.
