Abstract
This study aims to analyze differences in women’s intentions for additional childbearing by their employment status as well as childcare and education costs. It also explores the factors influencing women’s intentions for subsequent childbirth, with particular attention to whether the relationship between the burden of educational and childcare expenses and childbirth intentions varies by women’s employment status and the level of childcare infrastructure in the local community. To this end, two sets of analyses (Chi-square tests and HGLM) were conducted using the 2022 K-ECEC-P dataset. The results of the cross-tabulation analysis reveal that employed women tend to show higher intentions for subsequent childbirth compared to unemployed women. Conversely, women experiencing a higher burden of educational and childcare expenses tend to have lower childbirth intentions. The multilevel modeling results further indicate that, at the individual level, educational and childcare expenses consistently have negative effects, while women’s employment status shows a positive effect on subsequent childbirth intentions. At the micro-system level, stronger parenting values is a protective factor, whereas parenting stress is a risk factor. At the regional level, the childcare infrastructure is not statistically significant. Importantly, interaction effects suggest that women's employment status significantly moderates the negative relationship between the burden of educational and childcare expenses and subsequent childbirth intentions. Based on these findings, the study offers policy implications and recommendations to address ultra-low fertility within the sociocultural context of Korean society.
