Abstract
This study analyzed medical students’ perceptions and needs regarding extracurricular programs asafoundationforimproving medical education. A survey was administered to pre-medical and medical students at D University to assess their experience and awareness of general extracurricular programs, preferred program domains, and perceived importance and necessity of developing of the eight learning outcomes that are emphasized in Medical Humanities and Social Medicine. In addition, students’ preferred types of participation were also analyzed. The results indicate that participation in extracurricular programs was notably low, primarily due to insufficient information and the lack of desirable program options. Furthermore, students showed strong interest in psychological counseling and career-related programs, whereas interest in career preparation and start-up programs was relatively low. Independent samples t-tests revealed that pre-medical students perceived “Human and Illness” and “Medical Ethics” as significantly more important than medical students. Both groups identified “Communication and Collaboration” as the most essential area for extracurricular enhancement. Finally, students preferred engaging in extracurricular activities during the pre-medical years, receiving financial support, and participating in hybrid program formats.
