이 글은 동물의 지위를 바라보는 전통적 관점들을 살펴보는 것을 시작으로 오늘날 영향력을 가지는 세 가지 대표적인 관점인 이성주의, 감각주의, 내재주의의 입장을 검토한다. 그리고 이러한 입장들이 가지는 근본적인 한계를 칸트 윤리에 대한 재해석을 통해서 조명해 본다. 그 결과로서 드러나는 한계는 이러한 관점들이 가지는 인간중심적 전제와 이분법적 사고방식의 문제이다. 이에 대안적으로 생각해 볼 수 있는 관점이 고대 인도의 ‘아힘사’ 정신을 이어받은 간디의 생명존중 사상과 쇼펜하우어의 동정심의 윤리를 이어받은 ‘확장된 인간주의’이다. 이러한 입장은 우리에게 하나의 실천윤리로서 대안이 될 수 있을 것으로 보이지만, 여기서 한걸음 더 나아가 이론과 실천을 아우르는 보다 포괄적인 관점으로서 불교 생명윤리에 대해서도 살펴본다. 연기의 깨달음에 바탕을 둔 불교 생명윤리는 그간의 잘못된 이분법적 사고방식을 극복하고 모든 생명이 상생할 수 있는 새로운 생명윤리의 대안을 찾는 데 교훈을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The thesis discusses the three main theories that has great influence over contemporary animal ethics–rationalism, sentientism, and inherentism–, starting from examining the traditional view of the status of animals. However, by reinterpretation of the Kantian ethics, the fundamental limitations of these theories could be found. These are the anthropocentric premise and the dichotomous conceptions they possess. Here, Gandhi’s idea of ‘respect for life’ (originated from the ‘ahimsa’ doctrine of ancient India) and Horkheimer’s ‘expanded anthropocentrism’ (which stems from the ethics of ‘sympathy’ of Schopenhauer) could be considered as an alternative in the capacity of practical bioethics. Yet, the Buddhist bioethics provides a more comprehensive view, combining both the theory and its practice. The Buddhist standpoint, with its profound metaphysical ground, allows us to find a desirable new bioethics for the coexistence of all living beings.
