Abstract

Adolescence is a very important period in which capabilities as adults are prepared and in particular, a period in which qualities are cultivated in two aspects; holistic growth and identity development. These qualities can be developed through voluntary and qualitative leisure activities rather than learning or entrance exam oriented educational environments and provided service centered activities. Despite the importance of leisure activities in adolescence, leisure facilities for youths' positive development have not been constructed. This study was conducted by literature review and case study. Requirements for youths' leisure activities and leisure environments necessary to help such development were examined through literature review. In the present study, the meaning of desirable leisure as thought by youths, leisure activities, and demand for leisure facilities were surveyed from South Korean youths. As for desirable leisure, many youths wanted recreation through plays and entertainment and it was shown that they wanted rests the most among desired leisure activities. As conditions for leisure facilities, the youths were shown to regard free use time and atmosphere the most importantly and leisure facilities they wanted to use the most were cultural facilities following by recreational facilities and hobby/specialty activity facilities in order of precedence. As conditions for leisure facilities, they wanted short distances and use by diverse age groups rather than dedicated use by youths. These results indicate that the leisure culture wanted by youths is different from the standpoint of policy proposers. The results of the present study suggest that rather than unilaterally providing youths' leisure culture and facilities at the level of education, attention should be paid to multilateral understanding of youths' demand for leisure and the formation of healthy public leisure environments. exhibition.
