Abstract
Today we humans are faced with the ethical problems of ‘ world hunger and extreme poverty in the affluent world.’ Our human brain has moral automatic settings which sensitively respond to mere physical distance owing to partial empathy and altruism biologically evolved. Our sense of moral obligation is heavily influence by mere physical distance. Therefore many people intuitively judge that helping nearby people in a desperate plight is morally obligatory while helping faraway people in the same situation is admirable but entirely optional. However, physical distance is morally irrelevant, and it makes no moral difference. Along with the development of internet spatial-temporal distance has been reduced in a global village. As a result, moral relevance of physical distance is substantially invalidated. Our automatic settings and their moral intuitions are inappropriate for moral problems that arise from recent cultural developments as world hunger and extreme poverty. In order to deal with peculiarly modern moral problems, we ought to rely less on automatic settings (moral intuitions) and more on manual mode (consequentialist reasoning). By means of manual mode and its consequentialist reasoning, we humans shall acknowledge helping the faraway starving people as moral obligation and can lay the foundation for global ethics.
